The gas industry is aggressively expanding around the world, despite the intensifying climate crisis. The Asia-Pacific is the world’s largest im porter and exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), spurred on by the seismic expansion of gas production in Australia and the enduring role of Japan in financing, enabling and greenwashing gas across the region.

​This Amnesty International briefing highlights how Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs) are protecting communities, ecosystems, and human rights while opposing harmful fossil fuel projects around the world. The report argues that defending the environment is inseparable from defending human rights and that EHRDs are critical to achieving a just transition away from fossil fuels.
